Afraid of Silence?

The solutions to our collective problems won't come from more noise or mindless action. They'll emerge from people who have cultivated the courage to sit with silence.

In 1654, Blaise Pascal, a brilliant thinker, wrote: "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." Today, this observation feels more relevant than ever. When researchers recently put people in a room for just 15 minutes with nothing but their thoughts, many chose to give themselves electric shocks rather than sit quietly. Seriously. Crazy, huh?
