What is one of the top categories of content we see on social media? How to make money, isn't it? A new method, a new trend, a new quick get-rich scheme. Another creator idolizing billionaires for the only reason that they have accumulated a lot of money.
The truth is that we do need money, obviously. It is a tool that’s necessary to buy the essential stuff that keeps us alive. It's not going to make us happy though, but we need it. It's an essential part to operate in the game of life. It is important, but we overemphasize it.
I grew up surrounded by a wealthy social circle in Mexico. And I can tell you for a fact that money didn’t make those people less worried, stressed, anxious, or insecure. It didn't make them happier overall. They were just able to buy more stuff, that's it. They suffered from the same things as everyone else.
We think that by having a lot of money and all the comforts of life, we are going to have everything we need to be happy, and that's not true. Why? Well, because unless you work on yourself, you’ll always keep wanting more.
I have experienced many different things. I've been in all sort of financial positions. I've had abundance in my life. I've had a lack of abundance. I've had a business; I have been a dishwasher. And to me, the fascinating thing is that the mind always looks for ways to be dissatisfied with the current situation, no matter how abundant it may be.
You can keep doing whatever you're doing in the game of life, no matter what position you are in. Whether you're starting a business, or you already have a business and have a regular job, or you are studying. It doesn’t matter if you have money or if you're broke. Regardless of your circumstances, they key is to invest time in yourself to be able to enjoy the things you have around you without wishing for something else.
Whatever your case is, you have to make time to reflect on yourself, to meditate, to journal, to read things that nourish you and help you understand yourself and life better. To ask yourself the hard questions so that you are prepared to navigate life with equanimity through anything that you're facing. It's not wrong to be chasing success. It’s not wrong to want money. Just don’t get attached to it.
Work for the sake of working, for the right reasons; work to take care of yourself and your loved ones; work to express yourself and build something great; work to contribute something back to society, to help other people. Don’t do it for the recognition and validation of others. Don’t do it just to accumulate large piles of money. Do it for the right reasons and the abundance you desire to live comfortably will be a consequence of that.
The point is that regardless of what your path is, focus on yourself. Invest in the things that will help you keep this perspective. The things that will prevent you from falling in the trap of putting too much importance on money. Focus on becoming better than you were yesterday. Focus on doing things better than they have been done before. Focus on your growth, unfoldment and development. Focus on truly getting to know yourself.
