During New Year's Eve, my family and I played a fun board game called "Herd Mentality.” In each turn, a question is asked, and you have to write the answer that you think most of the players will write, thinking like the herd. One of the questions was: “What do you do first thing in the morning?” The most common answer was “go to the bathroom.”

After that game and reflecting on this specific question, I realized that as soon as I wake up, I drink a glass of room temperature water. It's something I started doing after reading this advice in the book ‘Hatha Yoga: The Yogi Philosophy of Physical Well-Being.’ So, according to the Yogis, going to the bathroom should be second in line, only after drinking water.

The body needs water to conduct cleansing tasks while you are asleep. Since you don’t drink any water during sleep, you need to replenish those fluids as soon as you wake up. Your body has been a third of your day without receiving a single drop of the life-giving fluid. It will use the new supply to wash away the waste created during the night.

The body is made up of around 70% water, remember?

Help your body perform its functions properly. Drink a glass of water before going to bed, then fill it up again and place it on your nightstand. That way, when you wake up, water will be ready to enter your body. Refill it and keep it next to you during the day, remembering to keep drinking. Make it a habit.

And every time you drink, savor the water in your mouth before swallowing. Let the Vital Force enter through the nerves in your tongue and mouth. And while you do, remind yourself of the benefits of doing so, as Yogi Ramacharaka wrote:

“I am giving my body the fluids it requires to do its work properly, and it will respond by bringing normal conditions back to me—giving me good health and strength, and making me a strong, healthy, natural man (or woman).”

If you have found value in the Daily Yogi emails, can you briefly share why?
