During the 1970’s a passionate and determined young runner captured the hearts of many as one of the most beloved American college athletes. He was renowned for pushing himself to the limit during training, setting new standards of endurance and speed. His name was Steve ‘Pre’ Prefontaine.
In a memorable race during the NCAA Championships, Pre faced formidable opponents. The crowd watched anxiously as he positioned himself at the front of the pack, setting an unwavering pace from the very beginning. With each stride, he poured his heart and soul into the race, refusing to settle for anything less than his best.
He narrowly missed victory that day, but his performance left an unforgettable impression on all who witnessed it. The crowd rose to their feet, applauding not only his remarkable physical abilities but also his unwavering commitment to giving his all.
In his memoir, ‘Shoe Dog,’ Nike founder Phil Knight recalls Pre’s mantra was "fast or die”. This epitomized Pre’s relentless pursuit of excellence. He gave it all on the track.
Do the same. Give it all to the task at hand. Whether it's preparing a presentation for your team, working on a job you don’t really like, picking up your children from school, exercising your body, tending to household chores, providing support to your closest friend during their times of need, mowing the lawn, or writing in your journal.
Wholeheartedly apply yourself and give nothing less than your absolute best. Try to be the best parent, friend, colleague, husband, sister, son, or wife you can be.
Life is full of different experiences. Joyful ones and challenging moments. Each one serves a purpose. Each one guides you. Each one teaches you. Each one shapes you into the person you are meant to be.
“No matter the sport, no matter the endeavor really,” Phil Knight wrote after watching Pre run, “total effort will win people’s hearts.”
Focus on the task at hand. Do not complain. Do not do it half-heartedly. Give it your best shot. Total dedication, that’s the way.
