In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get lost in distractions and avoid being alone with our thoughts. Many of us struggle with this and find it difficult to be content by ourselves. We often look for distractions to numb our emotions and escape from self-reflection. However, this avoidance can prevent us from doing the inner work that's essential for personal growth and happiness.
During my early 20s, there was a particular summer when my dad sent me to our family's remote ranch, far from civilization, in the middle of the desert, for a week. My responsibilities during this time included working on installing fences, feeding the cows and chickens, and carrying out other ranch work. However, I really disliked the experience. A few days after arriving, I recall crying and feeling miserable as I realized that I was missing out on parties and making memories with my friends. At that moment, I didn’t appreciate the value of being alone. The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) struck me strongly.
Over a decade has passed, and I now have a strong desire to return to that ranch. I have developed a newfound appreciation for spending time alone. Through various painful experiences that life has presented me, I have had to spend a significant amount of time by myself. It was during these times that I have grown the most. In fact, if it weren't for these years of solitude, I wouldn't be here writing this today. It provided me with the opportunity to reflect, question, read, write, and truly understand who I am.
Learning to be alone means accepting and being comfortable with your thoughts and emotions, no matter how difficult they may be. This requires self-reflection, which can be uncomfortable at first, but it's an essential part of personal growth. When you take the time to understand yourself, you'll become more self-aware and be able to make better decisions in life.
Life has a way to guide us into situations that make us grow. At the end of the day, you'll always be with yourself. Whether you're waking up in the morning or going to bed at night, you'll be alone with your thoughts. Learning to be alone can bring you more peace of mind and help you appreciate the world around you.
Learning to be alone is an essential part of personal growth and happiness. It's important to accept yourself for who you are and be comfortable with your thoughts and emotions. Remember that being alone doesn't have to mean being lonely. It's important to have a support system and people you can turn to for help when you need it. The key is balancing alone time and community time. When you take the time to be alone, you'll gain perspective, recharge, and be better equipped to navigate life’s challenges.
