Let It Resolve You
Paradoxes demand you inhabit both truths simultaneously. It is hard work. When you embrace both sides of a paradox, you transcend your limited perspective. The mind expands.
Why do the greatest spiritual teachings often sound like riddles? Seemingly contradictory instructions. "Kill out ambition, but work as those who are ambitious" counsels the mystical text 'Light on the Path.' Meanwhile, the Tao Te Ching advises us to "Act by not acting, do by not doing." At first glance, these teachings appear nonsensical. How can we simultaneously embrace and reject ambition? How can action arise from non-action?
The paradox deepens when we consider our own pursuit of wisdom. As we gain knowledge, we often find ourselves not more peaceful, but more troubled. Each new understanding reveals layers of complexity we hadn't seen before, presenting us with an uncomfortable truth. Wisdom itself can be a source of suffering. The sage becomes both more certain and more humble, more capable and more aware of their limitations.
"Much of the occult truth is written in the form of paradox," wrote Yogi Ramacharaka, "because our finite perspective restricts us to seeing only one side of a subject at a time." Like the blind men touching different parts of an elephant, we mistake our partial views for the whole truth.
These paradoxes demand you inhabit both truths simultaneously. It is hard work. When you embrace both sides of a paradox, you transcend your limited perspective. The mind expands. You learn to hold ambition and detachment simultaneously, like cupping water in both hands. You act decisively while remaining internally still. You become both student and master of life's unfolding mysteries.
The next time you encounter a paradox, don't try to resolve it. Instead, let it resolve you.
