There’s a difference between true love and selfish love. One is like sunshine, and the other is like a whirlpool. True love, like sunshine, radiates and shines over someone, whether they love the sun or not. Selfish love, on the other hand, is like a whirlpool that sucks in all the attention and demands love in return.

One is unconditional; the other one is not.

To the Yogis, true love means loving someone without any expectations of receiving love in return. It means giving love freely and finding happiness in the joy of the other person, rather than seeking validation or the same affection back. The very act of loving is what brings you happiness.

Not ‘I’ll love you if you do this… I’ll love you if you love me back… I’ll love you if you change this’— drop the ‘ifs.’ Let go of your selfish desires and expectations. Just love.

Be present with the person you love and, at the same time, remain unattached. Allow your loved one to be themselves, to do their own thing, let them grow, let them learn. Listen to them without judgment, support them, and show your appreciation for them regularly.

Instead of seeing love as a transactional exchange, view it as a limitless resource that you can tap into and share with others. Drop any fears or insecurities. Cultivate a state of mind where your happiness is obtained from the fact that your loved ones are content and happy.

And even if someone no longer reciprocates your love, or never did, remain satisfied. You did your part by radiating love, the only thing within your control. Unconditional love is, and always will be, the key to strong and lasting relationships.
