Right now, without any effort from you, your heart is beating. Your lungs are filling. Food you forgot about hours ago is being broken down and sorted and sent where it needs to go. You are running a complex operation and paying it no attention at all.

The bottom floor they called the Instinctive Mind. You share it with every animal, and with something of the plant and even the crystal. It keeps the body alive without consulting you. It also holds your appetites and your flares of temper, hunger and thirst and lust, and jealousy that rises before you approve it, and fear that fires before you think. None of this is shameful. It kept your ancestors breathing long enough to have you. The danger is only in mistaking the basement for the whole house, letting the oldest part of you drive while the rest sleeps.
