The consciousness and idea of what spirit is far beyond our comprehension. A common intellectual understanding of spirit is that it represents the innermost part of human principles. The divine spark within us. Our real self. It is the ‘I’.
The real ‘I’ is not the body, or any of its surrounding principles, and it is not the mind either. The real ‘I’ is independent of the body and mind, which are only vehicles for its expression. It is indestructible and eternal. It may change the form of its expression, but it will always be the same ‘I.’
Do not think of your soul as a thing apart from you, because YOU are the soul. All the rest is temporary.
This subject is really difficult to grasp, even for the smartest people. How can something limited like us comprehend something that is infinite?
To understand the spirit, we would need to understand the Absolute (God) because the spirit is like a small part of the Absolute. It's like a drop from a vast ocean, a grain of sand from an endless beach, or a tiny particle of a sacred flame. It's that something inside us that has driven our growth throughout history. It existed before anything else, and it will be the last thing to fully appear in our consciousness. This does not mean we have the Absolute inside of us, but just an emanation of it. Similar to a drop of the ocean that contains all the properties of the ocean, but it is not the ocean.
Imagine a light bulb covered with different layers of cloth. The spirit is the light at the center, and the surrounding layers are all the principles that make us human. Each one serves as a tool to help the spirit express itself.
It is good to know of the existence of spirit, as it helps us to understand the spiritual mind, which is the way that spirit communicates with the intellect.
The spirit is the part within us that is closest to the center and nearest to the Absolute. We only occasionally become aware of its existence, usually during moments of deep meditation or religious thoughts, reading a meaningful poem, or when we're going through a difficult time and need guidance from a higher being beyond what any human can provide. In those moments, we sense the presence of something unknown and awe-inspiring.
As a great poet once expressed,
“Lord of a thousand worlds am I,
And I reign since time began;
And night and day, in cyclic sway,
Shall pass while their deeds I scan.
Yet time shall cease, ere I find release,
For I am the Soul of Man.”
Do not fear in life’s journey, because you always have within you the real self, and its light will be as a lamp pointing at your feet showing you the way.
This is a series of emails describing the composition of us humans. I will briefly write about the general nature of each of these seven principles. At the end of this email series, I will send a downloadable PDF file so that you can have them handy and continue studying them to gain a complete understanding of yourself.
