One day, you'll realize you've already lived through some of the best days of your life, and you didn't even know it at the time. You were too busy chasing what's next, worrying about what's missing, thinking happiness was something you'd arrive at one day. Once everything finally made sense.
But while you were waiting, you were laughing with people who won’t always be around. You were making memories in places you’ll one day drive past and feel something you can’t quite explain. You were standing inside moments that didn’t feel extraordinary… until they were gone.
That’s the thing no one really tells you.
You rarely recognize happiness while you’re standing in it. It feels too ordinary. Too normal. Too small to matter. Until it becomes a memory you’d give anything to experience again.
The mind is always leaning forward, convinced that the real life is about to begin. That the better days are ahead. That fulfillment is waiting somewhere else. But as Yogi Ramacharaka reminds us, “The present moment is the only one over which you have control. The past has gone; the future is not yet. The wise yogi lives in the Now.”
And the only way forward isn’t through rushing ahead. It’s through fully inhabiting what already is. “The only way to grow is to live,” he continues, “to live out fully the life which is before you, doing well each day’s work, and learning the lessons that each hour brings.”
The ordinary days you’ll one day call some of your favorites. So stop waiting for life to start. You’re already living it.
