Among the oldest philosophical teachings known to humanity is Hermeticism, a wisdom tradition attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, a mythical figure, and later summarized in The Kybalion. Central to this philosophy is the Principle of Correspondence, expressed in both a simple and illuminating maxim: “As above, so below; as below, so above.”
An idea that suggests that the same laws and patterns operate throughout all levels of existence, from the smallest to the greatest. Though articulated through Western esoteric language, this principle stands in striking harmony with the teachings of the Yogis.
When viewed from a plane, human civilization resembles a living organism. Cities pulse like nodes of energy, transportation networks mirror circulatory systems, and countless individuals perform specialized functions that sustain the whole. Shift that perspective inward, and the same structure appears within the human body itself. Trillions of cells—each a center of limited intelligence—work in coordination, maintaining a life they cannot possibly comprehend in its entirety.
Nature offers the same lesson. Beneath the forest floor, fungal mycelium weaves through soil in gigantic networks, connecting tree roots across acres. These threads transmit nutrients and chemical signals between plants, creating what scientists call the "wood wide web." No single fungal cell knows the forest; but the network demonstrates a collective intelligence that coordinates entire ecosystems.
The Yogis extend this insight further, suggesting that humanity itself may stand in a similar relationship to higher orders of consciousness. Just as cells cannot grasp the human being, and individual fungal cells cannot comprehend the forest-wide network they help create, so too may there exist greater intelligences operating beyond the limits of human perception. Expressions of the same One Life manifesting on higher planes.
Contemplating this, I find both comfort and awe. Comfort in belonging to a living, intelligent cosmos where the same patterns appear through all scales of reality. Awe in recognizing how much remains forever beyond my comprehension. But perhaps that's the point. To see ourselves clearly, neither central nor insignificant, but rightly placed within the eternal law. As above, so below.
