Choose Love Over Ritual

During a Passover celebration in Jerusalem, when Jesus was thirteen, He witnessed firsthand how religious ceremony had turned into mindless brutality. What was meant to be a spiritual commemoration of faith and deliverance had transformed into a grotesque spectacle of bloodshed.

The Temple, meant to be a sacred house of worship, had become a slaughterhouse. Over a quarter-million innocent lambs were sacrificed in just two days, their blood flowing freely through the Temple courts. Priests, who should have been vessels of divine wisdom and compassion, stood with blood-stained robes, perpetuating this violence in the name of religious obligation.

The young Jesus, already awakened to higher spiritual truths, must have been deeply troubled by this scene. Here was the profound disconnect between ritual and true spirituality laid bare—how humans could convince themselves that the infinite Creator of all life would demand such wholesale slaughter of innocent creatures.

This same pattern of misunderstanding would persist through centuries. Religious institutions would continue to miss the essential message of compassion, choosing instead to focus on empty rituals and sacrificial ceremonies. Even after Jesus's time, churches would arise in His name, singing hymns about blood atonement, missing entirely His message of universal love and mercy.

The tragedy lies in how humanity repeatedly fails to grasp the simple truth. The same mindset that could justify the slaughter of innocent creatures in God's name would later justify persecution, war, and countless atrocities—all while claiming divine sanction.

God, the Absolute, doesn't desire anything, not even worship. We have free will, but why not choose mercy over sacrifice, love over ritual, respect over ceremony?

It's time to examine our own temples and ask what truly honors the divine.
