The afternoon sun beat down on Sayulita's central plaza, where vendors displayed their handicrafts in a maze of colorful stalls. My wife and I were weaving through the crowd when he appeared, seemingly from nowhere, holding what looked like a simple wooden rattle. What struck me first wasn't the instrument, but his face.
