In today's world, we often encounter two contrasting belief systems about our existence. On one side, there are those who firmly hold the view that we are our bodies, and this physical existence is the only reality, the end-all and be-all. On the flip side, there's others who embrace a more mystical perspective, suggesting that we are spiritual beings living in a transient, illusory physical experience.
But how can all this be an illusion, or 'Maya' as some people refer to it? Does it imply that everything we see, touch, or feel in our daily lives is devoid of any true reality?
What do the Yogis have to say about this? They see partial truths in both perspectives. They teach that, yes, this is the only life you got as the current person you are. I won’t be Manuel again. This is the only time I get to use this particular body. And also yes, we are spirit within and have a body to experience this physical world.
But this world is not an illusion.
You have to be careful with this perspective. It can be somewhat precarious, as it may lead you to conclude that nothing in life truly matters. You may believe that suffering, worldly affairs, and your actions hold no significance, as all of it is merely part of the “grand illusion.”
The truth lies in a more balanced and nuanced understanding. While it is accurate that your spiritual essence transcends the physical realm, it doesn't diminish the reality of your tangible, sensory experience. This physical existence is not an illusion. In fact, it is very real. And it is necessary.
Your body serves a purpose in this reality, providing you with the means to interact with and experience the world around you. You need to experience things in order for you to grow, unfold and develop and the only way you can do that is by having a body. What you perceive through your senses is undeniably real, as genuine as it gets. If you didn’t need a body, rest assured, you would’t have been provided with it.
So, embrace the reality of your existence. It is through this embodiment that you have the opportunity to learn, grow, develop, and evolve. Your physical experience is a precious gift, and every moment you live is a chance to savor this remarkable journey.
