In the 1970s, a young man took a job at Atari, the video game company. He worked on tasks that didn’t inspire him. He designed circuit boards for arcade games—hardly the creative or innovative role he dreamed of. But despite his lack of interest in video games, he gave the task his all.

One day, he was assigned a particularly difficult project. To redesign a game’s circuit board to use fewer chips, and save the company money. He didn’t complain. He didn’t cut corners. Instead, he worked tirelessly, using every ounce of his creativity and determination to solve the problem. The result? He exceeded expectations, and saved his company time and money.

At the time, this young man didn’t know where his career would lead. He didn’t have a grand vision of changing the world through this job. But he did know one thing, that no matter what he was doing, he had to do it with excellence. That approach—doing the best you can with what’s in front of you—paid off in ways he couldn’t have imagined.

That young man was Steve Jobs. His dedication to excellence, even in what he might have considered a minor job, laid the groundwork for his future success at Apple.

Now, while at Atari, he could have wonder, "Why bother?" After all, he didn't know then that he'd go on to co-found Apple and change the world. But he understood something. Excellence isn't about the task at hand, it's about who you become in the process.

How often do you find yourself in his shoes? Stuck in a job that feels meaningless, longing for something more inspiring? It's tempting to coast. To save your energy for that "dream job" you’re sure is just around the corner. But what if you’re missing the point of it all?

The Yogis taught that true fulfillment comes not from what you do, but how you do it. In other words, pour yourself fully into each moment, each task, regardless of the outcome. Even if you dislike your current job. Even if you think it’s not aligned with your long-term path. The effort you put in now shapes who you become later.

Give it nothing but your best. The skills, habits, and resilience you develop will carry you forward. There are always lessons to learn, even in tasks that seem insignificant. Find the joy in the act of doing. Every moment, every task, offers an opportunity to refine yourself, to improve how things are done, to solve problems, to express your creativity, and to grow. Maximum effort, no matter the situation, is never wasted.
