Rules Are Meant to Change

What once seemed appropriate or necessary is now seen as cruel and barbaric, and we must be open to new ways of thinking and being.

Throughout history, many practices that were once accepted as normal or even necessary are now viewed as barbaric or cruel. Slavery, public executions, child labor, witch hunts, forced marriage, gladiator games, segregation and discrimination, and even bloodletting, which was the practice of deliberately bleeding a patient in order to treat illness or disease. These have all been widely practiced in different parts of the world at different times. Yet, looking back on these practices today, we see them as terrible and morally wrong. We've come a long way from those times, but we still have a long way to go.

What are we doing today that will be viewed as barbaric in the future? It's hard to say for sure, but there are certainly practices that are controversial or ethically questionable. Factory farming, racism, fighting and killing each other for oil and more territory, the death penalty, which is still used in many countries, and the impact of human activities on the environment, such as pollution and deforestation, among many others. We are beginning to question these current practices, and it's likely that they will be viewed as primitive in the future.

Society's rules and values are constantly evolving, and what seems acceptable today may be viewed very differently in the future. As we evolve as a society, we must be willing to reexamine our practices and beliefs and make changes accordingly. One way to do this is to turn to the wisdom of ancient philosophies, like the Yogi philosophy, that reminds us that the human mind and spirit are constantly evolving through time. What once seemed appropriate or necessary is now seen as cruel and barbaric, and we must be open to new ways of thinking and being.

It's okay to change our minds and evolve as individuals and as a society. We should have opinions and beliefs, but we must also be willing to examine them and make changes as we learn and grow. Just because a rule or practice was acceptable in the past doesn't mean it has to be acceptable today. Changing your opinion is perfectly fine. It's natural to form opinions about things, and as we learn and grow, it's also natural to adjust those opinions. We must be willing to challenge the status quo and strive for a better, more compassionate world for all.
