Show Them Some Love
In life, being kind to others is probably the most important thing you can do. It’s the virtue of virtues. If you can only do one thing, be kind. It is a simple rule to live a meaningful life.
I'm moving in with my girlfriend, which meant canceling bills and services at my current apartment. When I called my wifi provider, I was connected to a representative named Cory. Upon introducing himself, he asked, 'With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?'
I responded, 'Hi Cory, I'm Manuel. How's your day going?' To which he enthusiastically replied, 'My day is going fantastic! The weather's beautiful outside, and I appreciate you asking. It's rare that anyone does. How are you doing, sir?'
Cory and I ended up chatting for a few minutes about his life in Florida, and I shared some anecdotes about Austin. Then he took care of what I needed and we hung up.
I couldn't help but wonder, why do so few people ask about the well-being of the individuals working on the other side of the phone?
I mean, it’s just a simple basic courtesy. How hard can it be? You can make someone happier just by asking about them, just by showing kindness. I always do what I did today. Even when I am calling to complain about being overcharged or to fix an issue that’s causing me trouble. No matter if I am angry or frustrated, I ask the human being on the other side of the phone how their day is going.
In life, being kind to others is probably the most important thing you can do. It’s the virtue of virtues. If you can only do one thing, be kind. It is a simple rule to live a meaningful life. Be kind, not only to the people you like and know, but also to strangers. To people providing you a service. It will make your interactions much more enjoyable and it will make you feel good.
If you ask the Yogis what is our one duty towards our fellow humans they will answer, simply:
“Be kind— and you will be all the rest.”
