The Elephant in the Room
The journey toward wisdom, then, demands you actively seek out other viewpoints. Because, unlike those blind men, who are just trying to describe the elephant—you’re also trying to guide it.
When social media comments erupt into yet another heated debate, I'm reminded of the ancient parable about blind men encountering an elephant. One touches the trunk and declares, "It's a snake!" Another feels the leg, "No, it's a tree trunk!" A third grasps the ear, "You're both wrong—it's a fan!" Each speaks his truth, but none sees the complete picture.
We're all these blind men. We fiercely debate about technology, politics, religion, abortion, or climate change. The economist sees market forces, the environmentalist sees ecological systems, the technologist sees optimization problems, the politician sees power structures, the psychologist sees behavioral drives, the historian sees recurring cycles. Each perspective is valid, yet incomplete.
The Yogi philosophy offers a different approach. A better one. The practice of "multiple truths." An approach that demands more than stepping back to see the whole elephant. One that requires developing the mental flexibility to hold seemingly contradictory viewpoints simultaneously. Yes, the trunk is snake-like, the leg is tree-like, and the ear is fan-like. All observations enrich our understanding.
But our modern challenge transcends the parable's simple dynamics. We actively shape our shared reality rather than merely observe it. Your perspective becomes a force that influences how this elephant evolves.
The journey toward wisdom, then, demands you actively seek out other viewpoints. Because, unlike those blind men, who are just trying to describe the elephant—you’re also trying to guide it.
