It Is Teaching You Something

There will be periods in your life that will demand the best of you, testing your strength, resilience, and will. It's inevitable; that's how life works. Focus on doing your best.

Working in the evenings and on weekends, exhausted after 12+ hour shifts—no time for hanging out with friends, traveling, relaxing, or seeing family. These were tough times. The restaurant business was failing because we were in the midst of a pandemic, burning through cash every single day. I was stressed, worried, and couldn't even pay myself. Barely keeping the restaurant afloat, I felt a heavy responsibility toward investors, my staff, and our loyal customers.

Many times I wondered, "Why? Why am I going through this? Why can't I achieve success after a decade of hard work? I deserve better. I'm a good person, and I'm smart. Why? Why?"

Aren't these the questions we ask when things don't align with our plans? When we're giving our best effort but not achieving the desired results? The success we believe we deserve? The freedom to do what we want with our time?

In moments like this, remind yourself of what Krishna once told Arjuna before heading into battle:

“Rule your actions and thought that your motive be right doing rather than the reward which may come from the action. Be not moved by hope or expectation of what may come as the result of your action. But also you must avoid the temptation of inaction, which comes often to someone who has lost the illusion of the hope of reward for action. Do your best, according to the dictates of your Duty, and then maintain that equal-mindedness which is the mark of the Yogi.”

Now, I look back on my ten years of struggling with my business venture. It didn't make me rich, nor did it result in the franchise empire I once dreamed of. But, I look back on it fondly, and I wouldn't change a thing. I would relive it all over again because it taught me countless lessons, connected me with amazing people, allowed me to discover new places, and showed me what I am capable of. It taught me patience, discipline, commitment, resourcefulness, and surrender.

There will be periods in your life that will demand the best of you, testing your strength, resilience, and will. It's inevitable; that's how life works. There will be times when it seems like things are not working in your favor. What should you do?

Do that job you dislike with enthusiasm. Confront that life-threatening disease with all your might. Keep moving forward even when the people you love depart from your life. Because it’s your duty. You've been placed in this situation because the act of going through it is a lesson in itself. The process and the lesson are the rewards. Focus on doing your best, even if you don't enjoy your daily tasks, even if they're not bringing the desired results. Don't give up, don't complain, and take it one day at a time.
