A Timeless Code of Conduct

Justinian's code is a timeless reminder of the values that you should strive to live by every day. Live honestly, avoid causing harm, and treat everyone with respect and fairness. Embody them and encourage others to do the same.

Justinian, a Byzantine emperor, was known for his legal reform contributions to the Roman Empire. He summarized the doctrine of human law to three general precepts:

"Live honestly, hurt nobody, and render everybody their due.”

This is a simple and beautiful code, and its honest adoption by mankind would make the world over in a day. But the thing is that nearly everyone will have their own interpretation upon each of the three concepts, and, consciously or unconsciously, stretches them in their own favor and against their fellow human beings.

It is very difficult for one, in the present state of the world to tell just what exactly is to be honest; to live so that you will hurt nobody; or to render everyone their due—or even to tell just what everyone’s due really is.

What did Justinian meant?

First, “live honestly." To live a life of integrity and to be truthful. Being true to oneself and others, avoiding deception, and sticking to one's principles. To commit to do the right thing, even when no one is watching.

Secondly, "hurt nobody." That we should avoid causing harm or injury to anyone, both physically and emotionally. To be aware of our actions and their potential consequences on others. To avoid any form of violence or aggression, whether in words or actions. To try solving conflicts peacefully and with mutual respect.

And "render everybody their due." To treat everyone with respect and fairness. To give people what they deserve and not take advantage of anyone. To recognize the inherent worth of every human being, regardless of their background, economic status, race, skin color, gender or beliefs. To create a society where everyone has equal opportunities and access to basic human rights.

Justinian's code is a timeless reminder of the values that you should strive to live by every day. Live honestly, avoid causing harm, and treat everyone with respect and fairness. Embody them and encourage others to do the same.
