Embody These Values
Living honestly, avoiding causing harm, and treating everyone with respect and fairness. This would lead us to a better world. We should make a conscious effort to embody these values in our daily lives and encourage others to do the same.
Justinian, who was known for his legal reform contributions to the Roman Empire, reduced the doctrine of human law to three general precepts: "live honestly, hurt nobody, and render everybody their due.”
This is a simple and beautiful code, and its honest adoption by mankind would make the world over in a day. But the thing is that nearly everyone will have their own interpretation upon each of the three concepts, and, consciously or unconsciously, stretches them in their own favor and against their fellow human beings.
It is very difficult for one, in the present state of the world to tell just what exactly is to be honest; to live so that you will hurt nobody; or to render everyone their due—or even to tell just what everyone’s due really is.
What did Justinian meant?
First, “live honestly" means to live a life of integrity and to be truthful. Being true to oneself and others, avoiding deception, and sticking to one's principles. It’s committing to doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Secondly, "hurt nobody" means that we should avoid causing harm or injury to anyone, both physically and emotionally. To be aware of our actions and their potential consequences on others. It means that we should not engage in any form of violence or aggression, whether in words or actions. Instead, we should try to solve conflicts peacefully and with mutual respect.
And "render everybody their due" means to treat everyone with respect and fairness. It means giving people what they deserve and not taking advantage of anyone. Recognizing the inherent worth of every human being, regardless of their background, economic status, race, skin color, gender or beliefs. We should strive to create a society where everyone has equal opportunities and access to basic human rights.
Justinian's quote is a timeless reminder of the values that we should strive to live by. Living honestly, avoiding causing harm, and treating everyone with respect and fairness. This would lead us to a better world. We should make a conscious effort to embody these values in our daily lives and encourage others to do the same.
