Your Body Doesn’t Need Them
As humans, we need to do simple things to keep our health. We don't need sophisticated gadgets and widgets to keep our bodies in good condition.
After my restaurant shut down, I had to find a job immediately. I started working with a friend of mine and I also downloaded TaskRabbit, which is an app where people can hire others to do various tasks for them.
One day, I went to a guy's house to install a bed frame and some wall fixtures. He was a cool dude. I could tell he worked in tech or had his own business because it was a weekday morning, and he was at home watching Youtube videos. What surprised me the most was that he had all these 'trendy' gadgets to improve his health. Leg compressors, dumbbells, Peloton, infrared chamber, powdered supplements, resistance bands, 'smart drugs' and many more items. The placed looked like a laboratory.
I couldn't help but think, 'Wow, that's too many gadgets. There's no way he can keep up with all of them. And also, he must have spent thousands of dollars.'
This experience reminded me of a wonderful branch of the Yogi philosophy: Hatha Yoga. Which, by the way, has nothing to do with the poses we practice in yoga studios. As Yogi Ramacharaka wrote:
“Hatha Yoga deals with the physical body—its care— its well-being— its health— its strength— and all that tends to keep it in its natural and normal state of health.”
He goes further to say that you should not “be dazzled and fooled by the mad rush toward externals that has caused modern civilized races to forget about nature.” Like the trendy gadgets this guy had.
“Hatha Yoga is first nature; second, nature, and lastly, NATURE,” he continues, “When faced with a choice of methods, plans, theories, etc., apply the touchstone: Which is the most natural way? Always choose what seems to conform most closely to nature.”
Which is more natural? Stepping into an infrared machine or stepping out into the morning sun? Taking 'smart drugs' or meditating to enhance cognitive abilities? Eating powdered supplements or eating fresh vegetables?
As humans, we need to do simple things to keep our health. We don't need sophisticated gadgets and widgets to keep our bodies in good condition. While these things may be useful in some cases, they are not necessary. Not to mention, they can be very expensive.
Stop seeking the newest and trendiest things. Don't fall for the incessant marketing by the companies that make these products. Your body doesn't need them. It is intelligent and simple habits will do to keep it healthy.
Just breathe properly, eat nourishing food, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, get sunlight, and get enough sleep.
