Let This Be Your Legacy

Live your life as a beacon of kindness, tolerance and self improvement. Instead of material achievements, let this be your timeless legacy.

In his Autobiography, Paramahansa Yogananda tells the story of his visit to the Yogi master Bhaduri, where he went to learn the science of self-realization. As part of the tradition, students placed rupees (money in India) at the Yogi master's feet, symbolizing their renunciation of material possessions.

On one occasion, a student exclaimed, “Master, you are wonderful! You have renounced riches and comforts to seek God and teach us wisdom!” The students knew that the great master had indeed been born into a wealthy family and had chosen to leave his share of the wealth.

The master responded, “You are reversing the case! I have left behind a few paltry rupees and petty pleasures for a cosmic empire of endless bliss. How, then, have I denied myself anything? I know the joy of sharing this treasure. Is that a sacrifice? The shortsighted worldly folk are, in fact, the real renunciants! They relinquish an unparalleled divine possession for a poor handful of earthly toys.”

This story teaches us that the true wealth lies not in what you accumulate, but in the richness of your inner journey. In your pursuit of self-realization, purpose, wisdom, connection and love.

This doesn't mean that we have to abandon everything we own and retreat to the mountains to meditate all day. You were born in precisely the right place and circumstances to play your part in the world. Embrace your life's duties and relish the material world, but do not get attached to things.

Live your life as a beacon of kindness, tolerance and self improvement. Instead of material achievements, let this be your timeless legacy.
