Balance Meditation and Action
A yogi is more than just a passive meditator; they are an active participant in the world. They strike a harmonious balance between reflection and action, recognizing the indispensable roles that both play in their journey toward self-realization.
"In general, meditation and concentration have a bad reputation in the West. They are regarded as a particularly reprehensible form of idleness or as pathological narcissism. No one has time for self-knowledge or believes that it could serve any sensible purpose. Also, one knows in advance that it is not worth the trouble to know oneself, for any fool can know what he is.”
The German psychiatrist Carl Jung reflected in the early 1900s. And while meditation has gained popularity in recent decades as a means of self-discovery, of reducing stress, and of controlling emotions, it still remains somewhat stigmatized as a sort of abstract and unnecessary practice.
Nevertheless, to the Yogis, meditation is an indispensable tool for profound self-exploration. It is the gateway to delving beyond the surface layers of the mind. In fact, meditation is the key to comprehending yourself.
How else are you supposed to truly know yourself if you don’t take the time to reflect upon your actions? If you don’t sit quietly with your thoughts, with your feelings?
Meditation is both an end unto itself and a means to a greater understanding. It makes you feel a sense of inner peace while you are doing it, or shortly afterward. It helps you separate yourself from your mind and body. It helps you understand that you are not your thoughts and emotions. And it allows you to observe and control them without being swept away by them.
But this doesn’t mean that you have to spend all day meditating or retreat to the woods and escape from society. All you need is a few minutes each day, wherever you happen to be.
A yogi is more than just a passive meditator; they are an active participant in the world. They strike a harmonious balance between reflection and action, recognizing the indispensable roles that both play in their journey toward self-realization.
It is your duty to actively engage with the world, guided by kindness, selflessness, and tolerance; to actively participate in your community and accept responsibility for your actions; to courageously confront the challenges of everyday life, and retreat to your inner fortress when needed.
